The record
A return to the Vanguard nearly six years after the classic 1961 dates, now with Alice Coltrane's shimmering piano and Pharoah Sanders' skronking tenor pushing the group into freer, denser territory. This is late Coltrane in full cry -- bass clarinet growls, dual saxophones, and Rashied Ali's cymbal-wash pulse replacing swing with pure motion.

The earliest pressing on file is a 1966 US Impulse! AS-9124 in stereo. Mono A-9124 is the same year, though the 1966 US mono row we list is a promo; a Canadian A-9124 exists in both mono and stereo, and UK His Master's Voice issued CLP 3599 in mono. Club editions MAS-90965 and SMAS-90965 also date to 1966. After that come long runs of Impulse!, ABC and MCA repressings into 1980. Modern: Impulse! IMP-213 on 180 gram, 1997.
