The record
The title track proved so knotted the band never landed a clean take -- producer Orrin Keepnews spliced the master from pieces, which tells you everything about the tune's difficulty. Rollins and Terry navigate the thorns alongside Roach's shifting meters on one of the pianist's toughest recorded dates.
Session personnel
- Ernie Henry — alto saxophone
- Oscar Pettiford — bass
- Paul Chambers — bass
- Max Roach — drums

Pressings
A 1956 Riverside test pressing of RLP 12 226 is the earliest thing on file, but the copy to hunt is the 1957 US mono RLP 12-226 with a deep groove -- it was repressed the same year in both deep-groove and non-deep-groove form, so read the label edge. Stereo arrives later, as RLP 1174 in 1958. London handled it abroad, including a flat-edge French LTZU 15.097. OJC-026 has kept it in print since 1982; for sound, Analogue Productions' 45 RPM mono AJAZ 12-226 or the newer AAPJ 12-226.
