The record

A 1944 Savoy date catching Byas mid-transition from Basie sideman to bebop's favorite tenor voice, his tone already thick with Hawkins-schooled authority. Rotating rhythm sections -- Slam Stewart's bowed bass, a young Max Roach among the drummers -- give this session the loose, exploratory feel of jazz turning a corner.
