The record

Cut before bebop piano had settled into its own grammar, these early sides pair Powell with both Max Roach and Art Taylor, Curly Russell's walking bass giving him open ground to sprint. The vocabulary that would rewire jazz piano is already audible, still finding its edges.

Session personnel

  • Curly Russell — bass
  • George Duvivier — bass
  • Art Taylor — drums
  • Max Roach — drums
  • Bud Powell — piano
