A dense, double-bass and double-drums session cut mid-decade, pairing Konitz's cool angularity against Curson's brass and the leader's own harmonically slippery writing. Hill's Arista years found him working larger, freer ensembles, and this date's crowded rhythm section pushes his compositions into knottier, more turbulent territory.
