Coltrane and Byrd trade phrases atop Garland's block chords on this expanded quintet date from November '57. Recorded during Coltrane's busy run of sideman work before Kind of Blue, it's hard bop craft without excess.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1961 US Prestige, PRLP 7209, in mono, with a promo of the same number alongside it. Esquire's UK 32-166 and a Japanese MJ-7037 both followed in 1962, and Prestige moved the album onto NJ 8325 in 1965. The sensible modern buy is OJC-349 from 1989, which also turns up as a Carrollton pressing. Our data lists no stereo copy anywhere.
