The record
Davis's first Columbia album introduces the quintet with Coltrane still settling into his own sound against Garland's block chords and the Chambers-Jones pulse. The muted, harmon-stemmed take on Monk's title tune became a standard unto itself.
Session personnel
- Paul Chambers — bass
- "Philly" Joe Jones — drums
- Red Garland — piano
- John Coltrane — tenor saxophone
- Miles Davis — trumpet
Contemporary reception
This is the initial LP effort for Columbia by the Miles Davis Quintet, headed by its namesake’s full and sweet trumpet excursions. The numbers, some borrowed, some new, are sometimes represented in a soft ’round about midnight glow or in a life-of-the-party burst. It’s clean-cut, and refreshing jazz sessions. The oft-recorded Davis crew has a quality jazz entry for their Columbia debut.
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file is a 1957 Columbia CL 949 in mono, a Terre Haute pressing with a deep groove. Several other 1957 CL 949 rows sit alongside it -- Hollywood pressings, a promo, and a six-eye copy -- all deep groove, so the label and pressing plant are what separate them. The first stereo we list is CS 8649, from 1960. Two-eye mono repressings begin in 1963. For modern mono there is Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-373 (2013) and MFSV 1-517 (2024).
