The record
Tuba as a bebop front-line horn is the whole proposition -- Ray Draper up top with John Coltrane's tenor beside him, and Gil Coggins, Spanky DeBrest and Larry Ritchie behind. The pairing is odd in the best way, Draper's heavy, deliberate lines set against Coltrane's climbing ones on Clifford's Kappa and Paul's Pal. New Jazz, 1958, notes by Ira Gitler.
