The record
This late-'56 Columbia date caught the Messengers mid-transition, with Jackie McLean's tart alto and Bill Hardman's brass fire giving the band a leaner, harder edge before the Blue Note glory years. Sam Dockery's comping and Spanky DeBrest's bass keep it grounded while Blakey drives every chorus toward the boil.

The 1957 UK Philips, BBL.7220, is the copy carrying collector detail: deep groove and a laminated sleeve. Later options run from a 1973 Japanese CBS/Sony, SOPZ 14, and a 1980 UK CBS 54302, through 180g mono reissues of CL 1040 in 2013 and 2022.
