The record
Coltrane on tenor, Red Garland at the piano, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones underneath -- the quintet Miles brought to Prestige, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering. Mostly standards: "Just Squeeze Me," "There Is No Greater Love," "S'Posin." "Stablemates" is the one that gives the horns something to argue with. Gil Mellé did the cover, Ira Gitler wrote the notes. LP 7014, 1956.

Top trumpeter Miles Davis comes up with a class assortment of various jazz moods. The Davis Quintet handles the six selections by expertly weaving its instruments in deft jazz harmony. This corner greatly appreciated the robust Miles trumpet and accompaniment on the oldie, "S'posin". Jazz fans will take to the set enthusiastically. Miles is a master.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file is the 1956 US Prestige mono LP 7014, repressed under the same number in 1957 and 1958; Esquire 32-021 carried it in the UK in 1957. OJC-006 from 1983 is the workhorse mono reissue, with Terre Haute copies noted. Analogue Productions cut a 45 RPM AJAZ-7014 in 2003, and Prestige's 2024 180-gram mono CR00722 is the current edition.
