The record
Blue Note stacks two 1953 dates here, Donaldson and Rouse's horns set against Elmo Hope and John Lewis's contrasting keyboard touch. Blakey and Philly Joe Jones split the drum chair, framing brass already fluent and warm well before the trumpeter turned twenty-three.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1956 mono BLP 1526, with deep groove, RVG stamp, Plastylite ear and a flat edge. Repressings through 1962 keep the deep groove but move to the 47 W 63rd address, so read the label before paying for an early copy. Liberty-era pressings appear from 1966, including a stereo BST-81526. For sound rather than pedigree, Music Matters cut BLP 1526 at 45 RPM in 2010.
