The record

A rare front line -- trumpet, trombone, and Coltrane's tenor -- gives this session a horn-heavy density unusual for a pianist's date, with Clark's own soloing almost modest by comparison. Chambers and Taylor keep the swing loose and unhurried, letting the frontline stretch out on the long-form arrangements.

The earliest on file here is a 1958 US mono, BLP 1576 -- deep groove, RVG stamp, the 47 W 63rd address, laminated sleeve -- with transition-label copies mixing NY 23 and W 63 sitting alongside it. A 1959 repress carries the Plastylite ear; a 1966 mono is explicitly noted without one. Stereo does not appear until 1966, as BST 81576. Music Matters' 2011 45 RPM gatefold, MMBST-81576, is the audiophile pick.
