The record
Sassy sits in with the Basie band's rhythm section and horns -- minus the Count himself, hence the sly title -- for a swinging date that proves she could ride a big band as easily as a trio. Freddie Green's guitar anchors the pulse while Foster and Wess trade riffs behind that famously elastic voice.

Pressings
Mercury issued this in 1959, mono as MG 20441 and stereo as SR 60116, and the mono is the earliest we list. Both are period copies worth having, and the stereo turns up in a Hollywood pressing. Britain got MMC 14021 and Canada MG C-20441 the same year. A 1963 red-label SR 60116 is the common American reissue, and the 1977 Japanese mono, SFX-10536, is the tidiest later option. The 1975 Trip TLP-5562 is skippable.
