The record
Metronome magazine's annual poll winners convene under Verve's banner, a late-'56 snapshot pairing Basie-band stalwarts Freddie Green and Sonny Payne with Mingus, Blakey, and Konitz across sessions running two full weeks. All-star dates like this rarely gel into more than a jam, but the personnel alone -- Chaloff's baritone against Farlow's guitar -- makes it a document worth owning.
