The record
Ron Carter's cello adds unusual weight to this dense 1968 septet session, Shorter, Bartz, and Shaw circling Tyner's modal writing with post-Coltrane fire. Arranged with an orchestrator's ear rather than built for straight blowing, it stands among his more ambitious Blue Note dates.
