The record
A blistering protest suite timed to the sit-in movement and African independence struggles, with Abbey Lincoln's screams on "Triptych" still among the rawest sounds committed to tape. Coleman Hawkins lends elder-statesman weight alongside Roach's insurgent young band, making Candid's boldest political statement in jazz.
