The record

Assembled from scattered 1957-58 Prestige dates, this set catches Coltrane still finding his voice after leaving Miles, with the title track's unaccompanied trio reading standing apart as a stark, searching ballad statement. Red Garland's blues-rooted comping and Donald Byrd's brass warmth ground the rest in the label's easy hard-bop house style.

Nothing on file predates 1961. The earliest we list is a US Prestige 7188 in mono, described with double deep grooves; a sibling 1961 7188 has a deep groove on one side only plus an RVG stamp, so check both sides before paying up. UK buyers see Esquire 32-129, also 1961. Prestige moved to PRLP 7188 in 1964 and to a stereo PR 7581 in 1968. Modern: OJC-131 from 1984 onward, and Analogue Productions APRJ 7188, mono, 200 gram, 2014.
