The record
A big, brassy mid-'60s Verve date that surrounds Irene Reid's blues-steeped alto with a small army of first-call sidemen -- three alto saxes alone, plus Kenny Burrell and J.J. Johnson filling out the charts. Recorded that January, it's a showcase for a criminally under-heard singer working with arrangers who knew exactly what to do with a big-band budget.
