The record
A split-bill West Coast date pairing two working bands of the early-'50s cool school -- Pierce and Collins leading a brassy, arranger-savvy nonet, Mariano fronting his own sextet with the fluid, Konitz-inflected alto that made his name. Fantasy caught both units mid-decade, a snapshot of the era's chamber-jazz ambitions before Mariano's sound hardened into something tougher.
