The record
A trombone leading a Blue Note date is uncommon enough, and Grachan Moncur III wrote the material too -- four pieces, Gnostic through Nomadic, handed to a band that could have taken them anywhere. Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock at the piano, Cecil McBee and Anthony Williams underneath. Rudy Van Gelder engineered. BST 84177, stereo, 1965.

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1965 US mono BLP 4177 on Blue Note with an RVG stamp; a stereo BST 84177 shares the year. Represses of both follow through 1966 and 1967, one of them, 84177, in a laminated sleeve. Later copies run to Blue Note's 1995 180g B1-32092 and a 2025 gatefold BST 84177. No audiophile line has taken this title on in our data.
