Pianoless and cello-shadowed, this quartet setting freed Dolphy's angular lines to bend against Ron Carter's arco textures rather than chord changes -- a stark, exploratory follow-up to Outward Bound that pushed his multi-reed voice further from the bebop mainstream.

Pressings
The earliest on file is a 1961 US New Jazz 8252 in mono with a deep groove; a 1962 copy of the same number carries an RVG stamp, and a 1963 repress drops the deep groove. A 1961 UK Esquire 32-153 is the notable import. Prestige took the title over in 1965 and issued it in stereo as PR 7652 in 1969. Modern choices are OJC-023 and the Analogue Productions APRJ 8252.
