The record
A high-water mark for the classic quintet, cut with Land's tenor still in the chair before Rollins took over -- Cherokee here is a trumpet clinic, all clean fire and harmonic nerve. Powell's charts give the group its tight, forward-leaning swing, a blueprint for hard bop's next decade.
