Baritone weight and bebop lineage meet head-on here, with Payne -- a veteran of Dizzy Gillespie's big band -- leading a crack rhythm section through Bird's book. Duke Jordan's harmonic instincts and a young Ron Carter's already-authoritative low end make this a sleeper worth seeking out.
