The record
A tightly voiced octet session that showcases Golson's arranging chops as much as his tenor, with Julius Watkins' french horn and Jimmy Cleveland's trombone thickening the horn charts to near big-band richness. Cut for Contemporary with a New York frontline of Farmer, Gryce, Shihab and the Kelly-Chambers-Persip rhythm section, it's a snapshot of late-'50s hard bop composition at its most sophisticated.

Pressings
The earliest on file is the 1958 US Contemporary mono C 3552, deep groove, and the data flags that row as a first pressing. Two period imports sit beside it: a UK LAC 12190 in a laminated sleeve and a Japanese London LY 1012, also deep groove. Watch the 1980 Monarch repress of C3552 -- it shows a deep groove too, so the groove alone will not date a copy. OJC-164 from 1984 is the honest budget route.
