The record
Blue Note's first sessions with the pianist, cutting "Round Midnight" and "Ruby, My Dear" as originals rather than covers -- angular, percussive, utterly unlike anything else on the label in 1947. A young Blakey already locks into that off-kilter rhythmic logic, laying groundwork for a compositional language jazz is still catching up to.
