The record
Shepp's tenor tears through turbulent ensemble writing alongside Brown's alto and Curson's trumpet, the date closing on a spoken elegy for Malcolm X. Impulse! plants its flag for the new avant-garde with this one, no easing in.

Pressings
Mono A-86 and stereo AS-86 both date to 1965 and both come in the Impulse gatefold; a promo mono of that year adds an RVG stamp and a laminated sleeve. Canadian copies, one of them a Sparton pressing, appeared the same year, French ones in 1966. From 1967 the AS-86 and A-86 numbers are reissues. The 1995 limited Impulse!, IMP-158, is the cleanest late option on file.
