The record
Billed as a Gil Evans date but really a showcase for two of the era's boldest young voices, Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp -- Evans lent his name and Impulse! clout while the writing pushed toward the avant-garde. A curious, transitional artifact of the label's early years, straddling big-band tradition and the free-jazz insurgency about to upend it.
