The record

Mose Allison's bluesy piano gives this quartet date a grittier undertow than Getz's usual company, the tenor's light vibrato riding easy over Farmer and Segal's unhurried time. A late-50s session that trades polish for warmth.

"THE SOFT SWING" -- The Stan Getz Quartet -- Verve MG V-8321 The young tenor saxist who has been a major influence on his instrument for the past several years, is heard here in a session recorded in 1957. With sidemen Mose Allison, piano, Addison Farmer, bass, and Jerry Segal, drums, Getz once more demonstrates his exquisite tastefulness on the ballads ("All the Things You Are," "To the Ends of the Earth") and shows his more recent urgency to swing on "Bye Bye Blues" and his own "Down Beat." He's an artist of indeterminable ability, as proven once more on this date.
