The record
Jackie McLean's alto has a sour, keening edge that rubs against Art Farmer's rounder trumpet, and the friction between them is the point of this January 5, 1958 date. Sonny Clark comps behind the horns with a blues-weighted touch and never hurries his own solos. Paul Chambers and "Philly" Joe Jones keep it walking. Blue Note BLP 1588.

The earliest on file is a 1958 US Blue Note BLP 1588 in mono, but the 1959 mono is the copy carrying the markers -- deep groove, RVG stamp, 47 W 63rd address -- and the 1960 and 1962 repressings keep the 63rd Street address or the Plastylite ear. Stereo does not appear until the 1966 BST 81588. Music Matters cut MMBST-81588 in 2009 and 2014; Japan's DBLP-007 from 2011 is a deep-groove, flat-edge mono.
