The record
The title track flips the script -- horns loop the melody again and again while the rhythm section does the improvising, a quiet inversion that says everything about where this quintet's head was at. Recorded with Carter, Williams, Hancock and Shorter, it's the last date before the band went electric, and arguably its most restless, composerly statement.
Session personnel
- Ron Carter — bass
- Anthony Williams — drums
- Herbie Hancock — piano
- Wayne Shorter — tenor saxophone
- Miles Davis — trumpet

Pressings
Every early row here is 1968. US stereo is Columbia CS 9594, with Pitman and Santa Maria pressing variants listed; mono turns up only as a Columbia CL 2794 promo, which makes it the scarce one. Europe took it as CBS S 63248 in Germany and France and 63248 in the UK, and the German stereo is the earliest row on file. Columbia's own 1970s repressings run on PC 9594 and KCS 9594. The audiophile option is Mobile Fidelity's 45 RPM MFSL 2-436, cut in 2014 and repressed in 2023.
Showing the first pressing, audiophile reissues and copies carrying a collector marker, out of 98 pressings on file.
