The record
Modal jazz distilled to its essence -- sketches and scales handed to the band with barely a rehearsal, letting Coltrane, Adderley, and Evans breathe inside wide-open spaces. Unhurried and inevitable, it's the sound of a sextet inventing a new grammar for improvisation on the spot.

Contemporary reception
Extraordinary blues session, featuring, along with Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderely, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, James Cobb and Wynton Kelly (on one track). Five numbers, all new Davis compositions, provide frameworks for fully improvised solos, and the musicians acquit themselves creditably throughout. Another great Davis session.
Pressings
Both 1959 Columbia issues are on file and they are the earliest we list -- mono CL 1355 and stereo CS 8163. Several CL 1355 copies carry deep groove labels, and the plant variants are catalogued separately (Terre Haute, Bridgeport, Hollywood), so read the runout before paying up for one. Australian and New Zealand Coronet KLP893 copies from the same year come in laminated sleeves. For a modern cut, the file holds Analogue Productions UHQR 0004 (2021), Mobile Fidelity MFSL 2-45011 (2015) and Classic Records CS8163 from 1995 onward.
