The record

Mathews' accordion was an odd fit for hard-driving 1950s jazz, but this session's frontline -- Gigi Gryce, Art Farmer, Herbie Mann on flute, Julius Watkins' french horn -- gives it real chamber-jazz weight. With Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke anchoring the rhythm, it's a rare showcase for the squeezebox among first-call New York players.
