A rare American showcase for the French pianist, caught live with Teddy Kotick and Paul Motian in tow -- a trio session heavy on wit, dense harmony, and Solal's slippery, Tristano-adjacent touch. Newport crowds got a glimpse of the European piano tradition that would later dazzle Sarah Vaughan and, decades on, Anthony Braxton.
