The record
Ron Carter's cello threads through an unusual sextet front line here, with Dolphy and Ervin trading angular, blues-inflected lines over Waldron's dense compositions. Cut for New Jersey's New Jazz label in 1961, it stands among his most exploratory writing.

Pressings
The earliest copies on file are 1962 New Jazz monos, NJ 8269, all with deep groove and RVG stamp; what separates them is jacket and groove width -- textured or not, wide or narrow. A 1963 pressing carries the deep groove on side one only, and the 1964 reissue lists the RVG stamp with no deep groove. Stereo turns up abroad, on Japan's Prestige SMJ-7077 in 1966. OJC-082 covers the 1983 reissue, and a 180-gram New Jazz repress, CR00724, followed in 2024.
