The record
A short-lived but sharp entrance to Blue Note, this trumpeter's debut leans on Detroit-honed hard bop instincts, with the pianist chairs split between Duke Jordan and Tommy Flanagan for shifting textures. "Buckshot La Funke" -- Cannonball Adderley slipping past contract restrictions -- adds a knowing wink to an otherwise straight-ahead session.
