The record

Coltrane's first Impulse! date in front of an audience, and the one that scandalized critics with Dolphy's keening bass clarinet on "Spiritual" -- modal jazz stretching toward the freer terrain ahead. Tyner and Jones lock into a groove elastic enough to hold the leader's soprano cries and still swing.
