The record
A restless transitional set stitching together the "India" and "Impressions" quartet dates with the doubled-bass, Dolphy-shaded lineups pushing past chord changes toward modal freedom. Impulse!'s orange-and-black spine marks the pivot point where Coltrane's classic quartet was still assembling itself.

Pressings
The earliest pressing on file is a 1963 US Impulse! A-42 in mono, gatefold. Stereo also appears under A-42 in 1963 with an RVG stamp, and the AS-42 stereo prefix takes over from 1965. UK His Master's Voice ran CLP 1695 mono and CSD 1509 stereo the same year. After that it is a long run of Impulse!, ABC and MCA repressings into the 1980s. For modern copies, Speakers Corner reissued AS-42 on 180 gram in 2007 and Impulse! remastered A-42 in 2026.
