Herbie Lewis and Higgins hold the swing steady even as McLean's alto cracks open toward freer harmony, absorbing Ornette and Coltrane without losing its bite. Walter Davis Jr.'s piano marks the hinge between hard bop and what came next.

Pressings
The earliest on file is a 1963 US stereo BST 84106 with deep groove, RVG stamp, Plastylite ear and laminated sleeve; the mono BLP 4106 from the same year carries the same set. Both numbers also appear in 1963 without the deep groove and still eared, so the groove alone is not the test -- the ear is. Blue Note repressed through 1967 and on, and current copies run to a 2014 European 180 gram BST 84106.
