Blue Mitchell's warm horn answers the alto's heat across this spring 1960 date, Bishop's bright comping lifting both voices. Chambers and Taylor drive the tempo without ever crowding it.

Contemporary reception
"CAPUCHIN SWING"--Jackie McLean--Blue Note 4038 A hard-hitting, vigorously direct jazz is played by McLean, Blue Mitchell and a highly efficient rhythm section consisting of Walter Bishop, Jr., Paul Chambers and Art Taylor. Trumpeter Mitchell is a fine compatriot for McLean, for both are earthy, soulful and consistently lyrical in their statements. Tracks include "Francisco," "Condition Blue" and "Don't Blame Me."
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is the 1960 US Blue Note mono, BLP 4038, though our listing for it records no markers at all. A 1966 mono of the same number is the row logged with deep groove and RVG stamp, and it is expressly noted as lacking the Plastylite ear -- the number alone will not tell you what you hold. Stereo runs as BST 84038 from 1966. Modern cuts: Analogue Productions' 45rpm AP-84038 and Classic Records' 200g mono, BN 4038-MONO-200G, both 2008.
