The record
Ray Barretto's congas are the wrinkle here, giving a tenor-and-rhythm session a rolling undertow that suits 'Canadian Sunset' and 'Hittin' The Jug' especially well. Gene Ammons plays big and takes his time; Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor never crowd him. Prestige PRST 7180, 1960, with liner notes by LeRoi Jones.

Contemporary reception
"BOSS TENOR"--Gene Ammons--Prestige 7180 Ammons has demonstrated that he can move with grace between a strong booting sound and a more graceful, sensuous sound, handling each method with firmness. He does both here, on such tunes as "Hittin' The Jug," "My Romance," "Canadian Sunset" and "Confirmation." Rhythm support comes from Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor and Ray Barretto. Good date by an artist with both pop and jazz appeal.
