Jackie McLean and Tina Brooks trade blues-soaked lines over Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes' locked groove, Redd's compositions doing the same sharp work he'd bring to his score for "The Connection" that same year.

Contemporary reception
Redd earned accolades for his music for the long-running off-Broadway hit, “The Connection.” Here, with Jackie McLean (also of “Connection” fame), Tina Brooks, Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes, Redd contributes more of the earthy blues passion that stood him in good stead for the show. The ensemble passages are stirringly portrayed in one-ness by the front line thespians and each displays a searching, soulful view solo-wise. Tunes are all Redd originals and include “Thespians,” “Shadows,” “Just A Ballad For My Baby.”

The earliest pressing on file here is the 1961 US mono BLP 4045; our data records no label markers for it, so judge a copy in hand rather than from a listing. The reissues are unusually good: Classic Records' 2005 mono 200g, BN 4045-MONO-200G, Music Matters' 2009 45 RPM stereo MMBST-84045, and Blue Note's 2025 180g 6807011. Skip the undated Scorpio repress that also carries BLP 4045.
