Hubbard's front line pairs with Spaulding's alto and flute for a tighter, more angular sound than his earlier dates, while Hancock's chords push the harmony into darker corners. A high point of the trumpeter's run as a Blue Note leader, cut with the era's sharpest young rhythm section.
