The record

A rare turn in the leader's chair for the bassist better known as anchor to Jazz Messengers and Detroit's hard-bop diaspora, surrounded here by Mobley, Byrd, and Burrell in peak late-'50s form. Duke Jordan's comping gives the session a loose, blues-soaked swing typical of Blue Note's mid-'50s house style.
