The record
Tate Houston's baritone gives this quintet an unusually dark bottom end, Sonny Clark's crisp comping and the Chambers-Taylor pairing keeping the low-horn frontline buoyant rather than heavy. Cut in 1957, it's an overlooked entry built on odd, effective horn voicing.

Contemporary reception
"BONE & BARI" -- Curtis Fuller -- Blue Note 1572 (1-12" LP) Fuller's tasty trombone work and Tate Houston's baritone sax offer the listener six punchy readings. The two soloists are nicely backed by Sonny Clark's piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and drummer Art Taylor. Of the six selections rendered, four are originals by Fuller. The two evergreens are "Heart And Soul," and "Again." One of the standout originals is one called "Pickup," a swinging opus that the boys deliver in a winning style.
