The record

Cut early in her career for Peacock, this date drops Carter into a full horn section stacked with Golson, Dorham, and Melba Liston's arrangements -- a rare big-band frame for a singer who usually worked closer to the bone. Wynton Kelly's trio anchors it, but the record's real charge comes from hearing that bebop-sharp voice cut through brass and reeds instead of standing alone.

"OUT THERE WITH BETTY CARTER" -- Peacock PLP-90 The former Lionel Hampton ork vocalist brings jazz vivacity and sensitivity to a program of varied jump tunes and romantics. Backed by a ten man outfit on one side, a six man crew on the other. Miss Carter carries slick be-bop taste on the likes of "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "Bab's Blues" and fine ballad poise on such durables as "Something Wonderful" and "But Beautiful". Jazz instrumentalists include Kenny Dorham, Sam Jones, Wynton Kelly and femme trombonist, Melba Liston. Smart jazz vocals.
