The record

Impulse! let McFarland trade the big-band canvas for a sextet, and the results are conversational and odd in the best way -- Kamuca's oboe against Raney's guitar, all built around the leader's mallets. Small-group scale suited his arranging instincts better than anyone expected.

Session personnel

  • Steve Swallow — bass
  • Mel Lewis — drums
  • Jimmy Raney — guitar
  • Richie Kamuca — tenor saxophone, oboe
  • Willie Dennis — trombone
  • Gary McFarland — vibraphone
