The record
Carmen McRae steps into the quartet's world here, her phrasing trading easily with Desmond's alto over Brubeck's angular comping. A one-off guest date from 1960, easy to overlook but worth the search.

Contemporary reception
"TONIGHT ONLY!" -- The Dave Brubeck Quartet, guest star Carmen McRae -- Columbia CL 1609 The Brubeck Quartet is joined by Carmen McRae for a performance of mostly Dave Brubeck originals (plus one standard and one each by Desmond and Wright). The lark is in fine voice as usual and the quartet does well by her in support, and also on the instrumental passages, but the songs don't really rate the quality of talent and amount of work expended on them. A better choice of material should have been made. Luckily (as the title indicates) it's just a one-night stand.
