A survey of the pianist's early Fantasy sides, cut before the quartet's Columbia breakthrough, with Desmond's dry, singing alto already the perfect foil for Brubeck's polytonal probing. Crotty and the rotating drum chairs keep things loose and West Coast cool, a document of the group finding its voice.
