The record
Bernstein's own material gets filtered through Brubeck's quartet on this crossover session, made in the same stretch that produced Time Out. Desmond handles the unfamiliar tunes with the same dry, unbothered logic he brought to the hit singles.
Session personnel
- Paul Desmond — alto saxophone
- Eugene Wright — bass
- Joe Morello — drums
- Dave Brubeck — piano
Contemporary reception
"BERNSTEIN PLAYS BRUBECK PLAYS BERNSTEIN"--The New York Philharmonic with the Dave Brubeck Quartet conducted by Leonard Bernstein; the Dave Brubeck Quartet--Columbia CL 1466 Howard Brubeck's (Dave's brother) "Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra" was enthusiastically received and critically acclaimed when Bernstein preemed it at Carnegie Hall early this year. Now recorded, it takes its place as a successful experiment in combining the forms of jazz and classical music and remains of high interest to students of this blossoming serious art. Side two finds the Brubeck Quartet alone for exemplary performances of Bernstein "show" music: "A Quiet Girl," "Maria," "Tonight." Deeply intriguing jazz issue.
Pressings
The earliest pressing on file here is a 1960 US mono CL 1466 on Columbia with deep groove. Several 1960 variants sit beside it -- Hollywood-plant mono copies, and stereo CS 8257 from Bridgeport, Pitman and Hollywood. Mono represses of CL 1466 run through 1967, so the plant markings do the dating. Abroad it went to Fontana, TFL 5114 in the UK and 682 080 TL in the Netherlands. Vinyl Passion reissued it as VP 80076 in 2017.
