Duke's songbook gets rebuilt here in cello and guitar rather than brass, Katz and Hall lending Ellington's writing a cool, string-lined quiet rarely heard applied to his catalog.

“ELLINGTON SUITE”—The Chico Hamilton Quintet—World Pacific WP-1258 The original Hamilton Quintet (not the current group) have completed here a project which took form in 1955—its own version of (and a tribute to) the most durable of Duke Ellington’s music. The group consists of Buddy Collette (tenor & alto), Jim Hall (guitar), Fred Katz (cello), Carson Smith (bass & arranger) and Hamilton (drums) with the addition of Paul Horn on flute. The tunes are “Take The ‘A’ Train,” “Perdido,” “In A Sentimental Mood” and other greats. Outstanding achievement.
